The Peak district
The Peak District, located in central England, is one of the most iconic climbing destinations in the UK. It’s famous for its gritstone and limestone crags, offering a wide variety of climbing experiences for all abilities. The area has a rich climbing history and is home to some of the most well-known routes in Britain. The Peak District is divided into two main areas: the Dark Peak and the White Peak. The Dark Peak is renowned for its gritstone crags, while the White Peak is characterised by its limestone cliffs.
Gritstone climbing is one of the highlights of the Peak District. This rough, coarse rock offers excellent friction, allowing for delicate, technical moves. Gritstone crags like Stanage Edge, Burbage and The Roaches are world-famous for their gritstone classics. Gritstone climbing is accompanied by strict ethics, there are no bolted routes and all routes are climbed free solo or with trad gear.
Limestone climbing in the White Peak provides a contrasting experience. Crags like Masson Lees and Horseshoe Quarry offer technical climbing on polished limestone, with both trad and sport climbing available.
Bouldering is also a big part of the Peak District climbing scene, offering classic problems across a wide range of grades. The gritstone boulders often require careful footwork and a strong mental approach due to their technical nature.
